Paper with a clay or other coating applied to one or both sides is coated paper. The coating can be dull, gloss, matte, or other finishes. Coated paper generally produces sharper, brighter images and has better reflectivity than uncoated paper. Coated paper typically is smoother and has better ink holdout, is less absorbent than uncoated paper making it more suitable for certain types of overprint finishing techniques such as flood or spot coating with varnish or other finish coatings. The coating may be applied while the paper is still going through the papermaking machine or it may be applied afterwards. Clay, latex, and other substances are mixed to create the coating. Photo papers for inkjet printing typically have UV coatings. Coated paper: Galerie Art Gloss, Galerie Art Silk, One Silk, Galerie Tom&Otto, Arctic Volume.
Uncoated paper
Paper that does not have any kind of coating such as clay or latex applied is uncoated paper. Uncoated paper is available in many different finishes, colors, and weights. Just as your clothes will absorb more water when you aren't wearing a coat, uncoated paper is more absorbent than coated paper. Paper density
he paper density of a type of paper or cardboard is the mass of the product per unit of area. The term density here is used somewhat incorrectly, as density is mass by volume. More precisely, "paper density" is a measure of the area density. Ways of expressing paper density are commonly used: * Expressed in grams per square metre (g/m²), paper density is also known as grammage. This is the measure used in most parts of the world.
